In response to the Shuttle Columbia tragedy on February 1, 2003, the students of our Dare-To-Dream program at R.P. Harris Elementary ”dreamed up” a remarkable project – “Coins for Columbia,”  a fundraising effort to benefit the families of the Columbia STS-107 crew.

Each grade level within the particiapting schools decorated half–gallon ice cream containers, donated by Blue Bell Creameries, L.P. These “collection cans” featured the official Coins of Columbia logo as well as student artwork. All money collected was deposited into a central Coins for Columbia bank account, established by Sterling Bank.

Col. Michael Anderson
The Harris Foundation celebrates the life of our space hero: Col. Michael Anderson, Payload Commander STS-107. Col. Anderson's professional and personal achievements show us that anything is possible if we are willing to believe and conceive our dreams. We will never forget his sacrifice and service to our community. We will pass on his legacy of making dreams...reality.

His visit to R.P. Harris Elementary School two years prior to his tragic loss inspired the entire school.  The students, teachers and staff will treasure those memories forever
